Ramadan runs on dua. The quiet words at sehri, the grateful words at iftar and the hopeful words of the last nights are what turn hunger into worship. This guide gathers the well known daily duas of the month with Arabic text, simple transliteration and an English translation, so you can read, understand and mean every word. For the expected month calendar, see our Ramadan 2027 dates guide.
Dua of Intention at Sehri
Before the fast begins, many Muslims state their intention with this well known dua. The intention in the heart is what matters most, and these words simply give it a voice.
Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri Ramadan.
Translation: I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.
Iftar Dua: Breaking the Fast
At sunset, after a long day of patience, the fast is broken with gratitude. This is the most widely recited iftar dua around the world.
Allahumma laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa alayka tawakkaltu wa ala rizqika aftartu.
Translation: O Allah, I fasted for You, I believe in You, I put my trust in You, and with Your provision I break my fast.
Another authentic report teaches the words said after the first sip of water: the thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills. The moments just before iftar are considered a precious time when duas are answered, so ask freely in your own words too.
Duas for the Three Ashras
Ramadan is often described in three stages of ten days, called ashras: mercy, forgiveness and protection from the Fire. Many families recite a short dua for each stage, alongside their own personal prayers.
First Ashra: Days of Mercy
Rabbi ighfir warham wa anta khayrur rahimeen.
Translation: My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of those who show mercy.
Second Ashra: Days of Forgiveness
Astaghfirullaha rabbi min kulli dhanbin wa atubu ilayh.
Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin, and I turn to Him in repentance.
Third Ashra: Days of Protection
Allahumma ajirni minan nar.
Translation: O Allah, protect me from the Fire.
The Laylatul Qadr Dua
When Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, asked the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, what to say on the Night of Power, he taught her this short and beautiful dua. It is the single most important dua of the last ten nights, explained fully in our Laylatul Qadr guide.
Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa'fu anni.
Translation: O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love pardon, so pardon me.
