A person quickly assembling a last-minute Halloween costume — a ghost sheet, witch hat, face paint kit and fabric on a table with pumpkins and a wall clock behind

It is October 30th, you have a party tomorrow, and you have done absolutely nothing. Welcome — you are in excellent company. Last-minute Halloween does not have to mean sad Halloween. With a focused hour and stuff you already own, you can pull together a costume that gets compliments and decorations that transform a room. This is the procrastinator's emergency playbook: fast, cheap, and genuinely effective.

30-Minute Costumes From Your Closet

The fastest costumes are concepts, not constructions. All black plus cat ears drawn from paper and eyeliner: cat. A white sheet with eye holes: classic ghost — cut the holes while wearing it (carefully) for proper placement. Plaid shirt, jeans, fake blood from the drugstore: zombie farmer. Black clothes, a red lip, and a drawn widow's peak: vampire. A name tag reading "Hello, my name is: Ceiling Fan" with "Go Ceilings!" written on your shirt: the pun costume that wins every office contest. Tourist (Hawaiian shirt, camera, sunscreen on nose), mime (striped shirt, white face, red lips), and "error 404: costume not found" (printed sign taped to a plain shirt) all take under 20 minutes.

One-Hour Decorations

Focus on lighting first — it does 80 percent of the work. Turn off overheads, scatter every candle and string light you own, and put orange or red fabric over lampshades for instant atmosphere. Cut bat silhouettes from black paper or trash bags and tape them to walls; from three feet away they look store-bought. Drape white sheets over furniture for a haunted-house feel, carve one pumpkin (a simple face beats an ambitious mess), and scatter candy corn and fake leaves on surfaces. A "spooky" playlist on a hidden speaker completes the illusion for roughly zero dollars.

Makeup Magic in Minutes

When the costume is simple, makeup carries it. A drugstore makeup kit plus YouTube-speed techniques go far: dark circles and pale foundation for zombie or vampire, a drawn stitched mouth for creepy doll, whiskers and a pink nose for cat. Fake blood — corn syrup, red food coloring, a drop of blue — sells every horror costume and takes two minutes to mix. Set everything with powder or hairspray so it survives the night. Even five minutes of makeup elevates a plain-black outfit from "didn't try" to "committed to the bit."

Party Rescue: Hosting With Zero Prep

Volunteered to host and forgot? Dim the lights, put on a horror movie with the sound low as ambiance, and set out one big bowl of candy plus whatever snacks you have decanted into bowls — presentation beats variety. A single game saves the night: Halloween trivia from your phone, a candy guessing jar, or a costume vote with joke categories. Text guests to bring a snack or drink each and you have a potluck. Nobody remembers that the decorations were minimal; they remember whether it was fun. Keep it simple, keep the music on, and enjoy the party you almost didn't throw.
